Frequently Asked Roofing Questions:

How can I recognize when my roof system has problems?

All too often, roof system problems are discovered after leaking or other serious damage occurs.  Periodic, twice per year, inspections often uncover cracked, warped or missing shingles, loose seams and deteriorated flashings, excessive surface granule accumulating in the gutters or downspouts, and other visible signs of roof system problems.  Indoors, look for cracked paint, discolored drywall and peeling wallpaper or visible stains.

What are my options if I decide to reroof?

You have two basic options.  You can choose a complete replacement of the roof system, involving a tear-off of your existing roof system or re-cover the existing roof system, involving only the installation of a new roof over the old one.  If you’ve already had one re-cover on your original roof system, you should remove both layers and install your new roof.  In some jurisdictions you may only have one roof system.  Local building code will determine the number of layers allowed.

My roof leaks.  Do I need to have it replaced completely?

Not necessarily.  Leaks can result from flashings that have come loose or a section of the roof system being damaged.  A complete roof system failure, however, generally is irreversible and a result of improper installation or choice of materials or the roof system installation is inappropriate for the home or building.

Can I do the work myself?

Most work should not be done yourself.  Professional roofing contractors are trained to safely and efficiently repair or replace roof systems.  You can damage your roof system by using improper roofing techniques and severely injure yourself by falling off or through the roof.

How long can I expect my roof system to last?

Most new roof systems are designed to provide useful service for about 20 years.  Some roof system types, such as heavy lifetime shingles, tile, slate and certain metal systems (copper), can last longer.  Actual roof system life span is determined by a number of factors, including local climatic and environmental conditions, proper building and roof system design, material quality and suitability, proper application and adequate roof maintenance and ventilation.

What will a new roof system cost?

The price of a roof varies widely, depending on such things as the materials selected, the size and style of the roof, accessibility of the roof, the roof height and pitch, accessories required for the roof system, etc.  We recommend looking at a full product range and make a choice based on budget and needs.  Keep in mind that price is only one factor and it must be balanced with the quality of the workmanship.

How long will it take to re-roof my house?

It really depends on the size and pitch of your home. We can complete most standard homes in one day.  However, more complex and larger homes take two to four days for complete removal and replacement.

When you tear-off my old roof will debris destroy my plants and shrubs?

We believe that you are expecting more than just a new roofing system.  We take the time to protect your home and landscaping.  Crews will clean up every-day and thoroughly at completion.

What is a laminate type roof?

A laminated shingle is made from two separate pieces that are laminated together through manufacturing.  The two most highly known are the GAF-ELK and Certainteed.

What types of roofing do you install?

We are experts at installing all types of roofing systems.

What is the best time of year to roof?

Just about any-time is a good time to install a new roof.  The only time where we recommend is during an extended bitterly cold period, when there is snow or ice on the roof, and of course when it is raining.  Arrowhead crews work year round from daylight to dark.

Do you require full payment before you start the job?

No. Payment is expected at completion or according to the terms of your contract agreement.

How can I determine my annual roofing cost?

When considering your roofing options, the following formula may help:

Total Cost (Materials and Labor) ÷ Life Expectancy of Roof in Yrs = Annual Roofing Cost

What is an ice dam?

Ice dams are formed when the gutter system becomes filled with moisture which, when frozen, forms a "dam" at the eave of the roof. When additional moisture gathers on the shingled area of the roof and is not able to run off due to the "dam" at the gutter line, this moisture becomes a frozen layer on the shingled surface and may back towards the peak of the roof.
