With the limelight on today’s current global climate crisis, more and more manufacturers are paying closer attention to the impact their products have on the environment. While not necessarily a new concept in roofing or to the home improvement industry in general, an increased awareness of the plight of our planet has led to more environmentally-friendly products and more stringent building regulations.
In today’s post, leading flat roof repair contractor Arrowhead Roofing explains the environmental benefits of roof coatings.

Energy efficiency. Coated roofing systems are highly reflective, which increases their ability to deflect heat for a cooler home. A cooler home means less HVAC equipment usage, which in turn translates to less CO2 and other harmful emissions being produced. The reflective and emissive properties of roof coating products also help reduce the Urban Heat Island Effect and decrease smog formation.
Increased roof longevity. Roof repair contractors agree that roofs treated with such coatings aid in prolonging the lifespan of a roofing system. Most roof coatings have the ability to reduce the effects of harmful ultraviolet (UV) light, which helps slow down the roof’s aging process.
Reduced construction waste. Overly-congested landfills are an increasing problem in the United States. As mentioned above, a roof treated with a special coating lasts longer, preventing a premature roof replacement. Fewer roof replacements reduce the amount of construction waste that will later end up in landfills.
Zero to very low VOCs. VOCs, or volatile organic compounds, are very common in building materials. These are gases that are emitted into the air, and they can be harmful not just to your health, but to the environment as well. Most roof coatings contain very little or sometimes even zero VOCs.
