What Oklahoma roofing code requires, in plain language: fastening, underlayment, ice barrier, ventilation and decking.
Oklahoma builds on the 2018 IRC with state amendments that are easy to miss, including one that removes shingle recover entirely, and the 2024 editions take effect on 14 September 2026. Code is not paperwork here. It sets what a carrier has to pay for and what an inspector will look at. These answers cover the specifications we build to, including the six nail pattern, which is the GAF enhanced fastening rather than the four nail standard application.
Two pieces of metal doing two jobs where a roof meets a wall. Step flashing goes in course by course, counter flashing covers its top edge.
When it will not hold a fastener. Oklahoma defines a solidly sheathed deck and excludes warped, split, cracked, deteriorated or rotten boards.
The code defines all three. Repair is maintenance, recover goes over the existing covering, replacement removes it to the deck.
There is no honest single number. The price is built from squares, pitch, facets, waste, layers, decking and the code items a cheap bid drops.
Not on a shingle roof in Oklahoma. The state prohibits laying asphalt shingles over any existing layer, which is stricter than the national code allows.
In valleys and at pitch changes, yes. Oklahoma requires a 36 inch barrier there regardless of any history of ice dams, which is why it applies in Tulsa.
One square foot of vent area per 150 of attic, halved only under conditions, and one of those conditions is not available in Oklahoma. The arithmetic.
Oklahoma registers roofers rather than licensing them. The public lookup, the insurance minimums, the display rules, and what changes on 1 January 2028.
Oklahoma runs the 2018 IRC until 14 September 2026, then the 2024 edition, plus four state amendments that change what a code compliant roof looks like here.
A roofing square is 100 square feet. How pitch, facet count and waste turn a house footprint into a material order, worked through on a real Tulsa area roof.
Oklahoma’s regulator has twice told carriers to treat every building code as strictly enforced, even where a city does not inspect roofs.
Code specifies the fastener, not the count. GAF’s standard application is four nails per shingle. Arrowhead installs six on every Tulsa roof.
